Where Black works
- Crisp next to white render and light porcelain paving.
- A strong outline for a garden room, a fence-line screen or a planter against pale walls.
- On a wall in full afternoon sun it takes on the most heat of our colours: on a south- or west-facing wall, Anthracite or a lighter colour stays cooler to the touch.
Design idea: run Black slats vertically on the front of a garden room and leave the side walls in render, so the entrance reads as one dark, crisp block. Laid horizontally on a planter or bin store, Black frames bright planting.
Clad a whole building in Oxford Heritage 3D™ Wall Cladding in Black and pick out an entrance, a feature wall or a planter in Black slats. The finishes differ — embossed boards, brushed slats — so hold samples side by side before you mix them on one wall.
How many panels do I need?
Take the wall area in m², minus doors and windows, and allow 2.0 panels per m² (each panel covers 0.50 m², because part of it sits under its neighbour — plan with the 200 mm covering width, never the nominal 219 mm), adding 10% for windows, doors and angled tops.
| Wall area | Panels (2.5 m) | Panels cost |
|---|---|---|
| 5 m² | 10 | £250.00 |
| 10 m² | 20 | £500.00 |
| 15 m² | 30 | £750.00 |
| 20 m² | 40 | £1,000.00 |
| 30 m² | 60 | £1,500.00 |

Fixing and trims
Panels fix with cladding clips and M4.2 × 32 mm black Torx self-drilling screws to a ventilated batten frame at 400 mm centres, vertically or horizontally, with starter clips on the first panel. Finish the wall with corner trims (L-angle), corner profiles and end boards, made in all seven slatted colours. Full installation overview: Catalogue 02 (PDF).
Where you can use it
Garden rooms and offices, summerhouses, sheds, bin and bike stores, planters, screens and existing garden walls on battens. Composite cladding is combustible, we do not currently publish a reaction-to-fire class for it, and it cannot be used on the external walls of residential buildings with a storey 11 m or more above ground, or on relevant buildings 18 m or taller (Regulation 7(2) and Approved Document B, England), and rules are stricter within 1 m of a boundary. Check with your building control body before you clad any part of a house.

Questions
Does black slatted cladding get hot in the sun?
Darker colours absorb more heat. On a south- or west-facing wall, Black gets noticeably warmer to the touch than Teak or Yellow Cedar. It is still a good choice for shaded walls, screens and planters.
Black or Anthracite slatted cladding?
Black is a deep, solid black with a satin finish and gives the strongest contrast against white render. Anthracite is a dark grey that sits closer to grey window frames, zinc and grey render. Order both samples and compare them against your wall.
Do slatted cladding panels need painting or staining?
No. The cap means no painting, staining, oiling or sealing. Wash with warm soapy water and a soft brush; if you use a pressure washer, keep a wide fan nozzle at least 300 mm from the surface. A little colour settling in the first months is normal.
